Fur: Fabulous or Faux Pas?

When it comes to the world of fashion, there are several hot topics that are sure to ruffle the feathers of die-hard fashionistas - fur is one of them. To wear it or not to wear it is the question for many. I have a fashion fanatic friend who swears by fur. She'll wear everything from mink to faux chinchilla. She believes that it's a timeless way to instantly add glamour and drama to any ensemble. While I, on the other-hand have never purchased a single fur item, neither faux or the real deal. It's not that I'm an adamant PETA activist, it's just that it doesn't fit into my personal style. **Pictured above: Ashanti, Beyonce and Mary J. Blige.

So I'm wondering what's your take on fur? Would you wear it either real or fake? Please share your thoughts.

FAB! My Aunt just passed hers down to me. I have to admit I have not worn it yet, but it is pretty. The photo of my coat is here on my blog.

When I was in DC, I was wearing my step-mother's fur eand I just felt.....funny. LOL, not sure but it felt strange. That being said, I think I'm going to jump on the "furs just aren't my personal style" bandwagon with you, BGG. Have a great Monday!

I want a fur! I couldn't justify purchasing one before, but now that I live in Chicago vs. Mississippi I can definitely use one. Maybe there's one in my future. Hopefully, my husband is reading this.

Fur is so fabulous ON WOMEN, not on the fellas. Everyone please tell your male friends to quit playin'.

We also just had the 10th coldest January ever in Chicago (avg 15.9 degrees), so I'm strongly considering rocking a fur even though I feel too young to have one.

When it comes to fur, I can't say that I am a fan. Not only because we are wearing the fur from a dead animal and calling it fashion, but also when I think of fur, I think of my grandmother. I am not sure what it is, but there is something about fur (fur coats, fur wraps, ect) that just makes me think "old lady".

No offense to the ladies that like fur or have fur... that is just my opinion.

I don't do fur but I do like the stuff that Beyonce and Ashanti are wearing. Mary J Blige looks like mutton dressed up as lamb. I also like the sleeveless jacket which we call Gillets.

Tamstyles, I am absolutely floored by your aunt’s coat. And so JEALOUS! You have no idea how lucky you are.

Well, I guess I’ll come out of the closet – AZ is yours truly – the fur fanatic! I’m not sure if I can wholeheartedly defend myself because at the end of the day, it is indeed cruel but my mentality (or justification, rather), is that the piece has already been produced and is on the shelf, whether or not I purchase it or not. Based on this – I do buy into the consumerism and hype. One can make the PETA argument against food products too! But not opening that door.

So on that note – I love love love love the look of fur. It is instant high fashion and very hard to mess up the look if you go au natural non-faux way. But these days, I have been extremely impressed with the faux market, great picks Brown Girl Gumbo, I am really thinking about ordering that last Chinchilla to wear to our Fashion Week escapades next week!

My sister was extremely pitted against fur until I lured her in and now she is unstoppable. Except for the time she got a fox fur coat for a steal and I really wanted to buy it off her so I tried giving her a moral guilt trip over buying it (sadly, didn’t work!).

Great topic BGG and it is interesting to hear the opinion of others. I am off to check out your links, hope any new orders make it in time for my NYC trip! :)

XOXO
AZ.

Love furs and I would be delighted to eat an animal and then wear him...double for my trouble! I must say I am opposed to men wearing furs...unless they happen to be a pimp!

I am not a big fan of fur, but these look really good.

im not a fan of fur. not even fur trim. nothing to do with the animals being harmed. just isnt aesthetically pleasing to me. i dont knock the next person for wearing it if that's what they fancy, though.

No, I love fur.,not faux fur. I have a pair fox ear muffs that I think glam up any type of winter coat. So yes to the fur. next up for me is a chinchilla or fox wrapper.

Must admit - I'm not a big fan. I've never seen a fur that I thought looked good - on the hanger or on a person. Not to mention that I've never lived anywhere cold enough to justify having/wearing one. I'll pass.

hmm i'm not a huge fur girl but if i do, it would be faux

well...here in chicago waiting on the elevated train @ 50 degrees below zero i am wearing my fur. also the only issue i have are those that are out on the attack becuse they see someone in a fur...please do not wear leather shoes or carry a leather handbag and/or let me see you eating chicken for lunch!

I don't wear fur but not because I'm an activist, I've just never been a fan. Don't knock those that do though.

i hate the peta people but no fur for me.

Love fur, but HATE faux fur! I'll most likely purchase one within the next few yrs.

I've never worn fur. I did once have a faux leather and fur jacket in high school, which by the way my BFF still teases me about whenever she gets the chance.

I don't think could pull off faux fur, and I don't have the heart to wear the real thing.

Hey...I never knew there was a garbage pail kids movie. I have got to find that bad boy on ebay! thanks for that info.

Eww. Fur is gross and absolutely wrong! Have you ever seen the videos that show how they get the fur off the VERY ALIVE animals?? The reason why they keep making it is because people keep buying it. Its a morality issue I guess then. Even if the animal is dead and gone and the coat is made, its still morally wrong. Heart breaking. I do Faux though because I love the look. Those Faux fur coats you have are real nice though. :-)

I love real fur. I also have a sable cape from my deceased Aunt. I have worn it a few times. If I move back to the Eastcoast I will definitely buy one.

By the time I got old enough to invest in such an item all this PETA stuff came out. I still want one. Like I want a floor length one I can wear with a pair of jeans and a white T. Yep. I want one.
