Got Ink?

Trends come and go, but one fad seems to have stuck around...literally. I'm talking about tattoos. Ink is the quintessential trend that will probably be around forever.

From Rihanna's itty bitty star cascade to the little old lady down the street with a sagging "hot stuff" on her chest, millions of Americans are "tatted up." I don't have any tattoos, but I know plenty of people who do, men and women. I must admit, I've always thought that tattoos on guys gave them an edge. What do you think?

Would you ever get a tattoo? If so, or if you already have one, have you ever regretted it?

Check out some of these celebrity tattoos:

Rihanna

Kelis

Mary J. Blige

Keyshia Cole

Mel B.

I don't too much have a comment on this one as I've visited tattoo parlors on a number of occasions but have yet to make a purchase. I DO, at some point, plan on getting a tatto though, so I'm interested in reading others' responses.

Over the past few years I have entertained the thought of getting a tattoo, but because I have sensitive skin and still get the occasional skin rash even though I'm adult, I have been too afraid to get one. My biggest fear is getting "tatted up" only to have an allergic reaction to the ink...and then what?

I just got one two weeks ago and I love it! Scared to show all my relatives, but most of my friends know. I don't think i'll ever regret it. I think its best you choose something you know you're gonna love for a long time. something that isn't just a trend and something you genuinely like or means something to you.

BGG, I have a "tramp stamp" as they are sometimes called and I love it. I don't care for tattoos on women that are totally visible. I think they are most sexy when strategically placed! A big tattoo on a woman's arm or leg or neck is just trashy to me. Now for a man it's different. I think all real men have at least one tatoo. BTW, there are three men walking around with my name boldly stamped on them and though we're through...they each say they have no regrets! Me either! HOLLA! Awww to be young again!

i could never commit to anything!!!

haha...tramp stamp. awesome!

I've thought about it, but my skin is hyper-sensitive and I'm not sure how it would react or how great a tattoo would look over an eczema breakout. And I can't figure out what I'd get. So, no tats for me at the present. I like them - in moderation - on others.

Rihanna's tats look like she has a skin disease on her back. Ick. I'm not a fan of tattoos on women. I don't have any and I don't think I'll ever get any. I change my mind too much to have somehting permanent on my body.

Now, for the fellas... Yes, it adds an edge for sure. I've dated guys with and without tattoos, so I don't discriminate, but it's always a pleasant surprise when you find a tattoo on a guy.

i probably will never get one...but if I did, i would get it in a place where it's invisible even when you wear a nice dress...my BFF got one on the left side of her back in the middle...that way, if she bends over you wont see it on her small of her back...but if she wears a low back dress it's still invisible...it's a really pretty Indian inspired design with peacocks...

I just got a tat in March of this year. It's a little bow on my lower back. I like it, I think it's in a good place, most people wouldn't know I even have one... My own mom doesn't even know I have it! lol

Ouch!! Even thought I have a fascination for tattoos I don't think I would ever get one. For consolation I got a henna tattoo once. I noticed that guys do pay attention to tattoos.

I do not have any tattoos, nor do I want one. I think when you're younger, they are a symbol of youth, rebellion & finding your inner self. When you get older, they look bad, especially on women who have lost/gained weight,or the up-keep on tatt starts fading and it seems out of place on a 30 or 40 something versus a 20 something.Especially in the workplace!I see these beautiful women all dressed up, and the trashiest tatts hanging out. I say: keep it classy. at least hide it so only you and whoever you want to see it, can see it.

I went to a wedding a month ago and every single girl in the wedding party had a tatoo on their arm. I was mortified. I couldn't believe it. If i got a tattoo, it would be on a place where very few people could see.

@K-Bear - Wow!! 3 guys have your name tattooed on their bodies??!! That's really something!! Do you know if any of them have tried to have it removed?

Phyllis Bourne said...

I saw a couple of sixty-ish women with them last week. They were plump, graying, Mrs. Santa types with tattoos of SNAKES and DRAGONS on their calves (surrounded by huge, veins).

Kinda cool, but kinda weird too.

@ BGG
I'm gonna get one before this year is over. I dunno what I'm gonna put on my body, tho. Maybe it'll be a picture of the 12th Planet. LMAO!!!

good post

I thought about it quite a few times but could not make the commitment.

BGG, I don't talk with those guys often but like I said, they wear my name proudly with no regrets! One of them said he got it specifically (on his neck) so people could ask him who "Kelly" is. He says every time they ask it gives him the opportunity to think and speak of me fondly. Damn, I'm good. ahahahahah kidding...kind of...

I have 9... am not done... and no I dont regret any of them... every one of them represents a part of me and a specific time in my life...

if I did have to get one removed though it would be my name on my back... people walking behind me in the summer yell out my name and I'm looking at them like their crazy because I know I dont know them... but forget that I have it on my back..lol

I must admit, I thought I was going to leave this earth without any tattoos. However, one day I decided to get one, I woke up and it was heavy on my mind. The tattoo that I have is very personal, it is the name of my company Soul Natural. Blessings BGG!

Tattoos aren't my thing. Needles scare me. I'd only get a really really little tattoo on my wrist. Otherwise, it's a no no.

I like Rhianna's stars. In fact, I like all things original. I think tattoos are just another way to express yourself.

I don't have any tattoos either. They're too permanent even though they seem really cute at the time. I'm going to go the temporary tattoo route. That way I can decorate my body and not be locked into it forever! I'll be getting some Indian henna tattoos soon.

I would never get a tattoo cause i'm afraid of the pain, but I like Rihanna's cause it's cute and feminine

tattoos...if done right can be really nice! on the other hand...it can also make someone look trashy if done incorrectly.

its a hit or miss and it just has to fit with your own personality...

i want one really bad! im just scurred! ^_^

I've never had one or really wanted one.

Since gas prices got high I started catching the bus/train and they are everywhere.

I hate neck tatoo's -- very short sighted in my opinion.

I also heard that tatoo's are a sign of low self esteem. Yet another good reason for me not to get one.

Eb the Celeb said...

@ rich - where the heck did you hear that tattoos were a sign of low self esteem?

that makes absolutely no sense

Brown Girl Gumbo said...

@Rich - Wow, I've never heard the "low self-esteem" philosophy before. I'm not quite sure if that's true, but that's just my opinion. Thanks for stopping by!

Tattoos have never been my thing. I've never wanted one, and hence never got one. But, I must admit that I am quite fond of the tattoo on Rihanna's neck. I especially liked that tattoo before she had extended.

I have a tattoo & plan on getting a few more. But the one I have isn't somewhere that the world can see. I did that b/c I didn't get my tattoo for other people, I got it for myself. And also, some tattoos can ruin a great outfit....like an evening gown. My future tattoos will also be out of view of the world. I prefer it that way.

Eb, what are your tattoos?!

Afrodite said...

I have one tattoo and I dont really like it. It's on my upper left shoulder and it's my zodiac sign (Scorpio). I don't think I'll be getting anymore tattoos...

Anonymous said...

i'm really late, huh? :) i have 3 and plan to get 2 or 3 more. all of mine are small and can be easily covered. the only one that probably won't be that coverable (if i ever get it) is a foot tattoo. i love tattoos tho. I think for women, however, we have to make sure we stay feminine and be cognizant of the future!
